Grace Bounds Dubus
Grace Bounds Dubus, 88, died November 30, 2006, after a long illness. She was born in Atlanta, GA, on June 15, 1918, to Grace Mae Felch Bounds and Howell Smith Bounds and moved with her parents at a young age to Savannah, where her father, H.S. Bounds, took a position as Savannah’s first recreation commissioner. Grace attended local schools, including Armstrong Junior College, where she was a member of the first graduating class of 1937. She then received her baccalaureate degree from the University of Georgia. In 1940 Grace married Gustave Robert Dubus, Jr, a native of New Orleans, at First Presbyterian Church, Savannah, where Grace had been baptized and was a member. They both were active, involved, lifelong members of the church.
Grace and Gus were widely known for their love of growing beautiful flowers, especially roses and camellias, and for their generosity in sharing their flowers with churches, schools, and other organizations as well as with friends and neighbors. They were both accredited American Camellia Society Judges and enjoyed showing their flowers and serving as judges at camellia shows in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
Grace also enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and family and was a skilled and avid bridge player until the end of her life. She was widely known and loved for her graciousness, generosity of spirit, friendliness, optimism, and concern for and interest in others.
In addition to faithfully serving First Presbyterian Church and being a longtime member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class at the church, Grace was a member of the DAR and served as a volunteer over the years with many local groups, including the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Gustave Robert Dubus, Jr., in 1995, and by her only child, Gustave Robert Dubus, III, a local attorney, in 1996.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Joanna C. Dubus, of Savannah and Lexington, VA; daughter-in-law, Judy Dubus, of Savannah; sister-in-law, Gloria D. McDaniel, of Memphis, TN; nieces and nephews: Gayle M. Long of Maui, HA, Preston McDaniel Marthe of Las Vegas, NV, JoAnn Dubus of Orlando, FL, Robbie Dubus Debbie of Pensacola, FL, and Carol D. Pippin Frank of Pensacola, FL.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Washington Avenue, on Tuesday, December 5, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to: First Presbyterian Church, 520 Washington Avenue, Savannah, GA 31405, or to the Armstrong Atlantic State University AASU Foundation, Class of 1937 Scholarship Fund, 11935 Abercorn St., Savannah, GA 31419.
The Dubusn home was my 2nd one when growing up on 57th street. I spent many hours playing games in her living room that Buzzy and I retreived from the attic. Buzzy, Hollis and I spent many 'Trick or Treat' evenings together trying to see who got the most and then sharing it begrudingly with our family. Grace was alway a willing 'audience' to our many 'talent shows'. We even got her to pay to attend. What a trooper. I, too, remember the flowers. My Dad spent a lot of time with them comparing them and learning new methods of creating new variety of camellias. I am sorry to lose the last of the family that I knew so well in my youth, but also glad that they are once again together along with 'Heidi'. We will miss them all but know that Grace is also vising with my Mom who preceeded her last November. God bless them all.

Our thoughts are with her family as a great Southern Lady passes on. We will always remember her as a kind and gentle lady with the best crab cakes and gumbo around.
